Lorne is one of the most popular holiday villages on Victoria’s Great Ocean Road. It is located about 45 kilometres from Apollo Bay and 50 kilometres from Warnambool in the center of one of Australia’s most scenic coastal regions. The Great Ocean Road was constructed after the great war to provide work for returning soldiers and the road itself is carved out of the cliff faces of the southern coastline and provides a spectacular access road for these superb seaside villages. The city of Melbourne is only 140 kilometres drive so Lorne has become a favourite holiday destination for Melbourne families. The Lorne region is a very popular destination for surfing and the beach has a very strong surf life saving club.
The main waterfront area is lined with boutiques, cafes and restaurants which gives the town a cosmopolitan ambience. The wide foreshore area leads down to a selection of patrolled sandy beaches. There is a jetty at Grey Point and the annual open water swimming event from the jetty to the pub is well supported. The mouth of the Erskine River provides a great sheltered swimming place for families with young children. The surrounding hinterland is magnificent and features a range of scenery including waterfalls, dense forests and spectacular coastal views. For the surfing fraternity the region is paradise with a selection of great beaches and headlands to choose from. Bells beach is among these and is home to the nation’s most prestigious surfing competition. The Bells Beach classic attracts top surfers from around the world. The nearby towns all have plenty of local attractions to visit and distances between them are relatively short.
The Otway ranges form the skyline inland from Lorne and it is only an 8 kilometre drive to see the beautiful Erskine Falls. The Otway State park is also nearby and a great destination for bushwalking and family days out. Accommodation in Lorne is excellent. There is a range that includes excellent resorts and modern self catering holiday apartments. Lorne also has a number of festivals and events that attract the tourist. Come and participate in the mountain to surf run held in January, the Lorne Sculpture exhibition or the Great Ocean Road marathon, held in May. Lorne is a great holiday destination set in a superb location so come and visit on your next holiday.
